U.S Representatives send letter to President Obama requesting that he press Mubarak to free Kareem

As many of you know, I have been a supporter in the cause to free Kareen Amer (Abdel Kareem Nabil Soliman), a fellow blogger from Egypt who has been imprisoned for almost three years now, because of what he wrote on his blog about political repression, religious extremism, and discrimination against women in Egypt. Kareem often expressed ‘secular’ views and called for equality for women in all aspects of Egyptian society. He also denounced violent attacks on Christians in Alexandria.

Kareem is forbidden from going outside and getting sunlight; his books have been taken away; and he is regularly harassed by inmates and prison guards on the orders of the authorities.

Since President Obama is visiting Egypt this week, Kareems plight has been brought to his attention. I will be among the many waiting to see if Obama can speak for all of those who have been silenced for doing what we in the west take for granted everyday.

Irelands Late Late Show

Fifty five percent of Ireland, or close to 1.4 million viewers were tuned in to watch Pat Kenny’s last ever Late Late Show last Friday night. Kenny is ending his ten year run as host of the longest running chat show in the world and being replaced by Ryan Tubridy who is ending his Tubridy Tonight show.

The final show featured actor Gabriel Byrne, singer Imelda May, promoter Louis Walsh, comedian Pat Shortt and U2.

Managing Director of Television Noel Curran said of Tubridy’s appointment: “Taking on the mantle of presenting the longest-running chat show in the world and a key entertainment brand for RTÉ is no easy task. We have thought long and hard about who the right presenter is to bring ‘The Late Late Show’ into its 48th year…’The Late Late Show’ is a unique programme that involves entertainment, comedy, audience interaction and social discussion. Ryan has shown time and time again on Television and on his RTÉ Radio One show that he can handle the range of interviews required of a Late Late Show presenter, with both skill and insight. He’s a great broadcaster and we know he’ll make the show his own.”

The RTÉ chief also hinted at a shakeup in the Late Late format saying; “Announcing a new presenter also allows us to look again at ‘the Late Late Show’. We want to keep the mix of entertainment and social discussion that are at its core but we also want to look at new ways of harnessing Ryan’s enormous strengths. He has a huge energy and passion for the show and we all look forward to working with him and playing to those strengths on air.”

Missing

By now you all have heard about Air France flight that has disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean. Reports now are that Brazil's largest airline, TAM, said its pilots flying from Paris to Rio spotted what they thought was fire in the ocean along the Air France jet's route. But Brazil's air force said a French merchant ship — the Douce France — searched that area "without identifying any trace of the flight."

A Mothers Passing

Gareths mother has passed away. He has not said much, but he does seem to be handling things better than I thought he might. I'm trying to be there for him in any way he needs, but no words can comfort the loss of a mother. You may know this day is coming, but you are never prepared for that moment.

Britians Got Talent

Britain's Got Talent "Grand Finale" show has become the most successful TV programme in Britain since England played Portugal in the 2004 Euro tournament.

More than 20 million viewers, or close to 75% of the country tuned into ITV1 to see Diversity win the Britain's Got Talent crown. While Diversity were good, almost everyone was obviously rooting for Susan Boyle. Even though she came in second, she will be the name everyone remembers from this competition.

And who can forget this guy....
