Kate Winslet won the BAFTA last night for her performance in The Reader. I'm going to see that in a few days along with Slum Dog Millionaire which won best movie. I love Kate Winslet, she is a great actress and always plays challenging roles. She is quickly becoming her generations Meryl Streep.
I'm also glad to see Heath Ledger winning for his role in Batman. That was the best movie I saw last year and his role was the one I remember most from any movie. Heath has won everything now and if he doesn't get the Oscar later this month, than something is wrong with that academy.
Something IS always wrong with that academy. The following would almost always ensure a win (or a nomination):
ReplyDeleteBritish accent
uglification (ala Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman)
other accents along with uglification (Philip Seymour Hoffman)
altering normal appearance (mickey rourke, felicity huffman, brad pitt, johnny depp, robert downey jr. see uglification)
They might as well give awards to comedians.
It's also open to politicking. During the run up to halle berry and Denzel's win, there was a buzz about how there's never been a black best actress and just one best black actor. I'm not questioning Berry's and Washington's talents but their simultaneous wins are suspect.
I do hope Heath would win, though. He deserves it.
I like Heath Ledger but I don't think he was that amazing enough in Batman. The tongue-flicking? How cliche is that? Even that guy in that Harry Potter used it. He's a good actor, but he wasn't fantastic in Batman. But I suppose this is a way to honor him.
