It's A Blue Life

More than 1,200 people in the town of Castleblayney, Co Monaghan took on the chilly hue last night as they successfully staged the latest bizarre Guinness Book of Records stunt, dressed as the popular cartoon characters 'Smurfs'.

Blue greasepaint has been flying off store shelves in recent days as young and old were eager to break the record.

Last night, Guinness World Record scrutineer, Erica Holmes-Attivor, declared the attempt successful. At last count, 1,253 Smurfs had taken part in the record-breaking event.

The unusual bid was organised to mark the opening of the three-day Muckno Mania Festival in the town, combining music and sport events, and coincides with the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Smurfs.
