Tall Ships Festival, Dublin Ireland

Dublin Docks, this is where I head off to work.

Several of us went to the festival of tall sailing ships at the docks today. We had a lot of fun looking at the tall sailing ships and I even got to take my friends on a tour of the ship I work on. It was a good day, a beautiful weather day, and we ate lots of food, heard some really good street musicians and even ran into some cheeky Seagulls.

With this being a bank holiday weekend with Monday off of work, we decided to go out drinking and dancing tonight and some of us got really shit faced. I stayed sober however and was the chaperon for my drunken friends. The hardest thing I drank tonight being some lemon tea my flat mate made for us at home. I don't have a hairy chest, but after drinking this stuff tonight I think I may wake with one in the morning.

One of the great things about Ireland is there is always some kind of festival going on, always something to go and do and reasons for the Irish masses to get drunk. The Irish live hard, work hard, play hard and the Americans, Canadians, Australians, and Germans I know that have come to Dublin and partaken of this hardiness can definitely relate to this culture.

Right now there are six of us at our flat and they have a bit of a karaoke contest going on right now. I must say, a not very good one. But its all in good fun, none of us are here to judge each other. The group includes Myself, Hamish who is one my closest Irish friends, my flat mate Duncan who has become like my little brother, Cullen, the brother of my flat mates girlfriend Katie who is also here with Sheila, one of her girlfriends.

It was a beautiful sunny day earlier and the flat is still a bit hot. All the guys are shirtless and doing a lot of hugging with each other. Its very homoerotic, especially for someone who hasn't had sex in....well, I don't even want to count how many days!

My cats don't know what to make of all this, its usually kind of quiet here. My little girl is in the middle of it all, she is a party cat from way back in the day. If she had fingers instead of paws, she'd be rolling one right now and lighting it up. My little boy, who is very protective of me since he thinks he's a dog, is sitting next to me on the desk eyeing everyone.

Sheila, who is very drunk right now, has become very touchy-feely with the guys and earlier as I started writing this she came over and put her hands on my neck and started rubbing my hair. That made me sit straight up in the chair and drew a laugh from my flat mate and his girl who noticed the scene. At this point Hamish is sorting through our Cd's to find something new to play and didn't notice. Just as I was about to ask her what she was doing she started scratching my back. So......I didn't say anything. What? That's my greatest weakness, I love me back scratched.

But as I mentioned, being drunk, she has become very touchy-feely. After a few moments of backscratching, she reached around the front and started rubbing my chest. Now I must admit I did sort of jump a little when she touched my chest, a little bit because I was startled, but mostly because its been awhile since anyone touched my chest, except for getting punched and kicked in it during martial arts class, and it sort of tickled me and I quickly grabbed her hands and looked up at her. I swear she was leaning in to kiss me when Katie whisked her away and sat her down on the couch where she is currently behaving herself, although singing a bit off key right now.

After she sobers up I am going to have to discuss with her that I can be a really good friend, I can take her shopping, I can cook her dinner, I can even decorate her house for her, but we're gonna need to talk about how the whole gay thing works.

Oh no! The song Danny Boy just came on and they are all hugging and singing. If these drunk Irish bastards start crying, this party is over!

Its Friday

I love getting a shower and getting clean. Its a great feeling. Now I am ready to start the weekend. My flat mate and I are going shopping this afternoon and then going out for a nice dinner with some friends. I am so glad the work week is over. I am ready to have some fun this weekend. I hope you enjoy your weekend.

Primitive

Members of an unknown Amazon Basin tribe and their dwellings are seen during a flight over the Brazilian state of Acre along the border with Peru. Survival International estimates that there are over 100 uncontacted tribes worldwide, and says that uncontacted tribes in the region are under increasing threat from illegal logging over the border in Peru.

Another Sleepless Night

Its a little past 2 am and I am still awake. My bed just feels empty tonight so I tried to get some sleep on the couch. But that didn't work either. I sat outside for awhile hoping the night air would make me tired. My flat mate came home from work and talked me into coming inside before I get sick.

I just played a few of the videos my man sent me from Africa and got to see his smile, hear his laugh and I played the "I love ya boy" part over and over. I miss my little Leprechaun. Not much sleep happening here tonight and morning is gonna kick my ass!

Watch Your Step

To my friend in San Diego....don't worry about your illegal alien signs. Over here we have signs warning our drunk asses not to fall off the side of the island!

I am working out of the office this week on a special project and after work a friend of mine Ian met me and we rode bikes around town for a few hours. It was good exercise and my legs are sore. I am actually starting to get some suntan. Although my legs are still white and I need to work on getting them tan. Bedtime, have to get up early. I am ready for the weekend.

Most Expensive Mission To Africa for Irish

The Irish Army peacekeeping mission to Chad will cost the Irish State €77m this year -- or almost €200,000 per soldier -- making it the most expensive in the nation's history!

Because of the economic boom in recent years known as the Celtic Tiger, the UN will not finance any more Irish peace supporting missions. The UN considers Ireland a wealther nation now and able to foot the bill for any overseas action it takes.

The cost of the Chad mission for the first 12 months is set to be €57m, plus a further €20m to transport the Defence Forces there and re-supply them, according to briefing material released under a Freedom of Information request.

The document, prepared for new Government Chief Whip
Pat Carey, also refers to the fact that the wear and tear on Army vehicles, such as the €1m MOWAG carriers, is high due to the "operational demands, poor conditions and harsh climatic environments" in the African nation. "This will be the most expensive operation on which the Defence Forces have ever been deployed," It added: "Given the widespread perception of Irelandd as a wealthy country, we are expected to meet our obligations in an EU context."

The Army already has 229 troops in a camp on the Chad-Darfur border, including 50 members of the elite Army Ranger wing. The numbers will increase to 430 in total this year, bringing the average cost of the mission per soldier to around €180,000 annually.

The paper states that the Army believes it can carry out its key role of protecting an estimated 400,000 refugees from Darfur despite the "medium risk" threat level of operating in a troubled African state.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the State's first UN peacekeeping mission in the Congo and a €175,000 memorial will be unveiled in Dublin's Merrion Square to commemorate Irish soldiers who died in the line of duty.

Dublin Treaty To Ban Cluster Bombs

Today in Dublin, Ireland, one-hundred-eleven nations agreed on a treaty to ban current types of cluster bombs and require the destruction of stockpiles within eight years. But the effectiveness of the treaty is in doubt considering the USA, Russia, China, Israel, Pakistan, and India did not take part in the talks.

Cluster bombs are fired by artillery or dropped from aircraft and scatter bombs across a large area to attack troops and vehicles simutaneously. The bombs often fail to detonate and when found later by civilians explode and kill long after they were left on the battlefield. These type of bombs have been devastating to farmers.

Ireland and other lead sponsors plan to unveil the treaty Friday after it is translated into several languages. Click here for the Irish draft. http://tinyurl.com/54fqjj

Irish Foreign Minister Micheal Martin called the treaty "a real contribution to international humanitarian law." He said it "is a very strong and ambitious text which nevertheless was able to win consensus among all delegations." He is hoping the widespread support will put pressure on all the countries that did not participate.

In London, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown welcomed the treaty, saying it was "in line with British interests and values, and makes the world a safer place."

Brown helped propel negotiators to a speedier deal by confirming earlier Wednesday that Britain would discontinue its use of two cluster munitions: one an Israeli-designed artillery shell, the other a U.S.-made rocket system for use on Apache attack helicopters. Britain previously had sought an exemption to continue using the helicopter-based weapon in particular.

Nonetheless, the draft treaty contains several concessions sought by the United States — a key absentee that still cast the biggest shadow over deliberations.

The pact would allow countries that sign the treaty to keep cooperating militarily with those that do not. Earlier drafts sought to prohibit such cooperation, but the U.S. and its NATO allies opposed that idea on the grounds it would complicate joint peacekeeping operations.

That section — nearly at the end of the 18-page document — makes it likely U.S. forces based in Europe will be able to maintain stocks of cluster bombs even if nations like Britain sign the treaty.

Bike And Other Items

My cousin as I mentioned previously, is moving to Australia in a few months. He has been cleaning out some items of his that he is not taking with him. He gave me a few things he thought I would want or could use and one of them was his bike. I have been thinking of getting a bike for sometime now, but always put it off. Now I have his bike and took it for a ride last weekend. But he had trouble saying goodbye to it and took it for one last ride before turning it over to me. Its funny how boys of all ages get attached to their toys.

It was a great time to ride a bike again and now I can get around town a little faster than my feet can walk me there. It was kind of wierd when I got on the bike, but I soon got used to the feel of it between my legs. (Get your minds out of the gutters, don't tell me your mind didn't just go there for a moment.)

It was fun to ride a bike again and my flat mate told me I came home with the biggest grin on my face. Sometimes as adults we forget how good it was to be a kid.

My Type Of Garden

I need to figure out a way to grow naked men in my garden!

Irish Aid For Africa

Yesterday I went with some friends to the Irish Aid celebration at Dublin castle. It was a great time and the money raised helps a great cause. Irish Aid is the Government's programme of assistance to some of the poorest countries in the world. Irish Aid works on your behalf to reduce poverty, inequality and exclusion in developing countries. This year, the Government will spend €914 million on overseas aid, making Ireland one of the most generous countries in the world. I never realized how much Ireland provides in assistance until I moved over here.

We took our own food and had a picnic and listened to the music throughout the day. There were book readings and dancing and lots of culture exchanges. I even tried some African food and while doing this and listening to the music I felt a little bit closer to my man who is deep in the heart of Africa right now. Although it also irritated me that my trip was canceled and I won't get to go to Africa and spend time with him, but I'm not going to whine about that right now.
